Discover Phù Châu Floating Temple: Saigon’s Hidden Spiritual Gem
Tucked away in the middle of the Vàm Thuật River between Gò Vấp and District 12 lies a mysterious and peaceful landmark — Phù Châu Floating Temple, known locally as Miếu Nổi Phù Châu. Although its name suggests it floats, the temple actually rests on a small islet surrounded by water on all sides. The only way to reach it is by boat, making every visit feel like a small spiritual journey.
History and Legend
Phù Châu Floating Temple is believed to have been built in the late 18th or early 19th century. According to legend, a fisherman once found the body of a drowned woman in the river. Moved by compassion, he buried her properly and built a small shrine in her memory. Over time, people came to worship here, praying for peace, luck, and safety on the water.
During the years of war, the temple fell into ruin but was later rebuilt by local residents who wanted to preserve this sacred space. Today, Phù Châu Temple stands as one of Saigon’s most beautiful and unique spiritual sites.
A Unique Architectural Treasure
The temple’s design is a perfect blend of Vietnamese and Chinese architecture, with more than one hundred dragon sculptures decorating its roofs and walls. Every corner is covered with colorful mosaics, carvings, and detailed tile work. Inside, you can find altars dedicated to various deities such as Maitreya Buddha, the Mother Goddesses, the Five Elemental Goddesses, and General Quan Công.
Behind the main hall lies a small turtle pond, surrounded by trees and flowers, creating a quiet and meditative space that feels worlds away from the city’s noise.
Visiting the Floating Temple
Phù Châu Floating Temple sits on the Vàm Thuật River, between Gò Vấp and District 12. Visitors can reach it by taking a short ferry ride that costs about 15,000 VND round trip. The temple is open daily until around 5 PM, and longer on special lunar days and New Year celebrations. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to visit — when the light is soft, and the river is calm.
