The Legendary Woman Behind Saigon’s Famous Bridge, Canal, and Market
Have you ever crossed Thi Nghe Bridge, shopped at Thi Nghe Market, or walked along the banks of Thi Nghe Canal?
While millions of modern commuters pass through this bustling district every single day, very few know that the name Thi Nghe doesn't describe a physical landmark. It belongs to a real woman who lived over 200 years ago.
Who was she, what did she accomplish, and how did her name transform into the identity of an entire Saigon neighborhood?

1. The Noble Origins: Who Was "Bà Nghè"?
According to the historic 19th-century chronicle Gia Định Thành Thông Chí by scholar Trịnh Hoài Đức, the woman behind the legend was Nguyễn Thị Khánh.
She was the eldest daughter of General Nguyễn Cửu Vân, a celebrated commander under Lord Nguyễn Phúc Chu who led troops to clear, cultivate, and defend the southern frontier lands.
The Origin of the Name
-
From Wildlands to Infrastructure: Joining her family in settling the wilderness of Gia Định, Nguyễn Thị Khánh funded and constructed a wooden bridge spanning the local canal to make travel easier for local farmers.
-
Why "Bà Nghè"? The locals named the bridge Cầu Bà Nghè and called the stream Sông Bà Nghè. The title came from her husband's government position as a high-level scribe (Nghè), as custom dictated addressing respected women by their husband's title.
-
The Evolution: Over two centuries of spoken Southern dialect, Bà Nghè gradually transformed into the familiar local name: Thị Nghè.
2. From a Wooden Bridge to a Booming Inland Port
The wooden bridge didn't just help people cross the water—it ignited an economic explosion.
As transit across both banks simplified, merchants and farmers began gathering around the foot of the bridge to exchange local produce. This informal trading post grew into the historic Thi Nghe Market.
Positioned directly along a major waterways network, the area became one of Gia Dinh's most active commercial ports:
-
In 1837, historical records note that the Thi Nghe Customs House collected over 13,000 quan in tax revenue—an immense sum for that era.
-
It wasn't just a market; Thi Nghe referred to a vast territory of Gia Dinh nestled between the Saigon River and its surrounding canal networks.
-
The canal itself was historically known as Bình Trị Giang before locals permanently dubbed it Sông Bà Nghè.
Old Saigonese journalists, including Phạm Công Luận, recalled that the waters of Thi Nghe Canal were once so crystal clear that you could see shiny copper coins resting on the riverbed, surrounded by schools of fish.
3. The Forgotten 1957 Tragedy at the Botanical Gardens
Directly along the banks of Thi Nghe Canal sits another iconic landmark: Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens (Thảo Cầm Viên Sài Gòn). Established in 1865, the park expanded north across the canal in 1924, with a footbridge constructed to connect the two sections.
However, this footbridge became the site of one of Saigon's most terrifying urban legends.
On National Day in 1957, during a flower exhibition, a massive crowd packed onto the narrow pedestrian bridge. Suddenly, a prankster shouted a panic-inducing joke: "The tiger escaped its cage!"
Chaos erupted. Believing a wild predator was loose, thousands panicked and rushed the narrow footbridge. The resulting stampede caused severe casualties and fatalities. Following the tragedy, the bridge was permanently locked and dismantled.
4. A 200-Year Legacy Lives On
From a simple wooden bridge built to aid local villagers, the name Bà Nghè – Thị Nghè grew to embrace a canal, a bustling market, and an entire district of Saigon – Gia Dinh.
While Madame Nguyễn Thị Khánh passed into history centuries ago, her contribution to the city's infrastructure remains built into everyday life. The next time you cross Thi Nghe Bridge, remember that beneath your wheels is a story of a pioneer woman, a strategic trade hub, and two centuries of Saigon's living history.
