From Indochina’s Largest Arsenal to a Green Oasis: The Transformation of Ho Chi Minh City’s Hidden Historic Gem

Once the site of the most massive ammunition depot in Indochina, this historic location in Ho Chi Minh City has been transformed into a lush, fragrant park. Tan Phuoc Park now serves as both a peaceful "green lung" for the city and a silent witness to a monumental chapter of Vietnam’s military history.

The Relics of a Military Powerhouse

Located on Nguyen Thi Nho Street in Tan Binh District, Tan Phuoc Park may be modest in size, but it is rich in heritage. At its heart stands a towering monument dedicated to the elite commando forces, marking the exact spot of the former Phu Tho Hoa Bomb Depot.

According to the Tan Binh District Cultural and Sports Center, the French colonial forces seized over 3 square kilometers of rubber forest in Phu Tho Hoa village in 1946 to establish a strategic weapons reserve. This facility was a fortress of massive proportions:

  • Dimensions: 2km long and 1km wide.
  • Structure: Divided into three main sectors for bombs, ammunition, and fuel.
  • Security: Protected by six layers of barbed wire, moats, minefields, and numerous watchtowers.
  • Capacity: At its peak, it housed over 15,000 tons of explosives and millions of liters of fuel, guarded day and night by an armored battalion and canine units.

Two Historic Blows to the Colonial Arsenal

The depot was a high-value target for Vietnamese forces, suffering two major attacks. The most significant occurred on the night of June 1, 1954.

Under the leadership of the Saigon–Cho Lon commando units, ten elite soldiers led by Nguyen Van Cự infiltrated the "impenetrable" fortress. Using timed explosives, they successfully detonated the facility. The aftermath was staggering:

  • 10,000+ tons of bombs and ammunition destroyed.
  • 10 million liters of fuel incinerated.
  • The defending European-African battalion was effectively neutralized.

Historically, this victory is regarded as a follow-up blow to the legendary Battle of Dien Bien Phu, echoing through international military circles at the time.

A Modern "Green Lung" Rooted in History

In 2005, the site was officially recognized as a City-Level Historical Relic by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee. Today, the remnants of the bunkers have been repurposed into a serene public space.

Why Visit Tan Phuoc Park?

  • The Commando Monument: Built directly on top of the old bunker roof, flanked by a bas-relief of Hero Pham Van Hai and a victory stele.
  • Frangipani Gardens: The park is famous for its aged Plumeria (Frangipani) trees that bloom with a sweet fragrance year-round.
  • The Exhibition House: History buffs can explore artifacts, documents, and a detailed 3D diorama (sand table) recreating the 1954 raid.
  • Local Atmosphere: It is a perfect spot to watch local life, as residents gather here for morning tai-chi and evening strolls.

"I was shocked to learn this peaceful park was once a massive bomb crater," says a local resident. "It gives the park a unique soul. It’s small, clean, and the air here feels different because of all the trees."

Whether you are a history enthusiast or a traveler looking for a quiet escape from the Saigon heat, Tan Phuoc Park offers a unique blend of solemn remembrance and natural beauty.
